The loos you choose matter. 60% of Europe's rivers do not have a good ecological status. 100% of the UK’s rivers are chemically contaminated. Animal agriculture and human sewage overflows are major water pollution contributors, and chemical fertilisers cause pollution, emissions, and health issues.
Hosted by Jane Healy, the sanitation manager of Glastonbury Festival and Boomtown Fair, our expert panel will deep dive into the vital world of sanitation, unearthing opportunities and busting myths.
Vac loos versus compost toilets. Cranfield’s non-sewered circular sanitation technologies with immediate separation and processing of solid and liquid waste streams. LaPee's female urinals, reducing both queues and inequality. NPK’s fertiliser made from festival-goers’ pee. Every venue and event organiser needs to attend this session.
NPK Recovery turns urine into fertiliser, harnessing the power of bacteria to recover nutrients from waste. The team has an early-stage system that connects to waterless or chemical free toilets to process waste into a safe and sustainable fertiliser. In future, NPK Recovery aim to scale their operations to divert the nutrients in human waste away from sewage, creating circular sanitation systems.
This session will feature reinventing the toilet by Cranfield University which is a non-sewered household sanitation system that integrates source separation, advanced on-site treatment, and resource recovery to deliver safe, climate-resilient sanitation without sewers, high water demand, or grid dependency.
Lapee revolutionises sanitation for events and public spaces by combining smart design with impact. The urinals drastically reduce queues, improve safety, and create a better user experience - while also using less water, fewer resources, and smarter logistics than traditional toilet setups. Today, Lapee is used at hundreds of events across 26 countries every year, making millions of people happier, safer, and free.
Speakers: Dr Serap Ozmen (Cranfield University), Petra Kaukua (Lapee), Lucy Bell Reeves (NPK Recovery)
