Sisyphean or Herculean? The task ahead for decarbonising transport

Moderator: Vikki Chapman (Live Nation UK & Ireland)

Speakers: Glenn Lyons (Mott MacDonald / University of West of England)

Nearly half of all brand-new cars sold in the UK last year were petrol- or diesel-powered-only and will remain in our car fleet until the late 2030s. So, is 50% enough? Is the glass half full or half empty when addressing transport decarbonisation? Is the transition rapid or too slow? To bring about serious change, we need to avoid unnecessary motorised travel, shift travel that does take place towards a more sustainable mode, and improve the environmental efficiency of motorised travel that occurs. Avoid, shift, improve. But are these three areas of focus getting the attention they need? How do we even find ourselves in a world where Paris has voted to treble parking charges for SUVs? Technology got us into this mess, so can we rely on it to get us out of it? Is behaviour change too much to ask, and how can we help bring it about anyway? More questions than answers you might think, but this reflects the uncertainty we face and why the world needs true leadership.
