Liverpool UN Accelerator City: One Year On

Last month, we returned to Liverpool for Expedition Two, marking one year since the city became the UN’s first Accelerator City for Climate Action. The programme – supported by Ecotricity and launched with Expedition One, ACT 1.5, and Massive Attack in 2024 – has driven a series of pilots exploring how live events, film, and TV can rapidly decarbonise at city level.

During Expedition Two, we heard from Liverpool City Region Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram, Liverpool City Council Leader Cllr Liam Robinson, and key industry partners who helped deliver pilot events throughout 2025. The UNFCCC shared insights on Liverpool’s pioneering role and lessons for future Accelerator Cities.

A highlight for us was M&S Bank Arena Liverpool being recognised as one of the UK’s greenest venues and receiving Highly Commended Greener Arena certification. The venue team’s commitment to embedding sustainability across operations – from resource use and emissions to accessibility and community engagement – was officially announced during the event, and we’re delighted to support their continued leadership.

We look forward to hearing about the next steps for the UN Accelerator City.

Cllr Harry Doyle, Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Culture, said:

“Over the past year, our city has shown the power of collaboration between local government, creative industries, and community groups to drive real progress towards net zero.

“Sharing these pilot results and blueprints will not only help Liverpool cut emissions from live events and screen production but will also inspire other cities to follow our lead.

“This summit marks a pivotal moment in our journey – proving that when we come together, a sustainable, decarbonised future for Liverpool is within reach.”
